If You won't Listen To Yourself, Listen to These Honkers

Back in the days before I traded my heels for boots, I was a huge Warren Buffet fan. He said the best investment you can make is in yourself. To me, that meant getting more formal education.
Then it meant joining a program to teach me how to start my own business.
Then it meant joining a program to get healthier.
Then it meant joining a program to learn how to write.
I loved programs. They taught me how to do things I wanted to do. They came with groups of people that wanted to do it too. Best of all, they had known start and end dates. How I loved the certainty of knowing when I could tick the box.
Here’s what I learned after leaving the controlled environments for the real world.
Investments Don’t Always Have Direct Outcomes
After I left the Zoom room, I met a successful entrepreneur that was willing to teach me for free! He had the skills I needed- the staying power of nuclear waste, the balance of a totem pole, and a thought trajectory years into the future. Watching this person navigate the life of an entrepreneur equipped me with real life training that can only be learned by doing it.
If you can see Something in Someone else, you Have it in Yourself
It was the skills I didn’t want to learn - how to change a gas filter, how to cut a tree down, and how to fix a toilet - that taught me how to be persistent, patient, and stand on my own two feet. After not calling someone to fix the thing I didn’t want to fix, but could fix with a little effort, I realized the only person that could make me successful was me. I couldn't call someone to do it for me.
The line to self trust is never straight.
Self trust means trusting what is here in the moment, and responding to it in the way that is most true to you. Custom designed, one of a kind, individuated, uncopycattable, unreproducible you. Be true to that one.
If you’re in the waiting room to break free from the program into the real world, do it! Do the thing your intuition is asking you to consider. Surprise yourself with the discovery of how the forces of nature will rise up to support you.
