The last two weeks

There are two weeks of the season left here at Camp of the Woods, and we are officially in the twirl of transition from what we’re closing out to what lies ahead.

It has me thinking back to the last two weeks of working at jobs I quit so I could be here. This is what giving two weeks notice taught me:

1.) The work didn’t really matter as much as I thought it did. Training people and preparing status reports to facilitate the continuity of my work made me realize I was indeed replaceable. No matter how much of my identity I attached to this thing that I did, I wasn’t that special after all. Darn! 

2.) The pressure of having too much to do in too little time was gone because time was no longer indefinite or seemingly infinite. I couldn’t start anything new and wasn’t responsible for keeping anything going, so now I was just in between and waiting.

3.) The people mattered more than I realized. With everything else stripped away, the only thing that really keeps anything going is people.

These last 2 weeks of the season also have me thinking about what I’m looking forward to this winter:

1.) Publishing a collection of poetry I’ve written

2.) Getting my TV and film manuscripts made into videos

3.) Finishing the manuscript I’m writing now
