I took this picture during a walk on Wednesday (June 24) evening. The trillium is one of many wildflowers to enjoy along the side of the road this time of year.

I often wonder if Canada Day landed on the first of July by chance or design because it truly is the best time of summer to enjoy what this beautiful rugged country has to offer. Like a Friday afternoon is to a weekend, July is to the summer - there’s still a lot of it left ahead to enjoy.

For summer people, the month of July is the beginning of true summer. Warm temperatures, long days, and water sports. July is a great time to take walks, go for bike rides, read books, and enjoy evenings around a campfire or a corn hole game.

The mosquitos have et up a bit from what they were like earlier this month, and there aren’t any black flies to speak of either. While the birds get up way too early, it’s nothing that can’t be remedied with the sound of a fan blowing in the background.

For star gazers, you have to stay up late to catch a glimpse of the best the night sky has to offer.  There’s no light pollution here  in the outskirts of Rainy River, so the views of the small constellations and cosmic objects that are very far away are easy to see with the naked eye.

The moon setting on the south horizon this week (June 22, 2026) was so bright at 1:30 in the morning, I thought the neighbour across the river had installed some type of super yellow-orange light on a tall tower above their house. By the time I got outside for a closer look, most of it had sunk below the shadowy tree line. I figured it must have been the moon. I’ve never seen anything like it though, that I remember anyway.

When I woke up at 1:20am 2 nights later, I looked out my window to see if it that yellow-orange glow was anywhere near where I had seen it earlier, but there was no sign of it.

Did you notice the moon this week?
